A Message from Our Founder & CEO
Michael R. Gagnon, MBA
Founder & CEO, AOC Connect; Founder & CEO, JobsInOrtho
Chief Administrative Officer – Emeritus, Duke University Orthopaedics
“The Academic Orthopaedic Consortium (AOC) was officially established in 2005 when I launched our first benchmark study to examine orthopedic surgeon compensation, clinical productivity, and the external funds flows negotiated with health systems and schools of medicine to ensure financial viability. This inaugural study, offered at no cost to ten academic orthopaedic departments, marked the beginning of a new era of collaboration across academics. At the time, I was struck by the absence of reliable benchmarking data specific to academic orthopaedics and saw a tremendous opportunity to build a true sense of community—free from membership fees and cumbersome governance structures that often hinder growth and innovation. To this day, we have never charged membership fees.
What began as a grassroots effort—to examine surgeon compensation, clinical productivity, and the external funds flow we were negotiating with health systems and Schools of Medicine—has since grown into the largest academic orthopaedic community in the United States.
It’s humbling, to say the least… and it’s been an amazing journey of togetherness.
Today, the AOC spans 180 university-based orthopaedic departments and more than 100 private practices and health systems. Through it all, we’ve stayed true to our founding principle: never charging a single cent for membership, for access to best practice presentations, or for our compensation reports for chairs, executives, and orthopaedic specialties.
It has been one of the greatest honors and joys of my life to witness this community evolve into a thriving, generous ecosystem—defined by open sharing, real-time support, and collective wisdom about what works (and what doesn’t) in academic orthopaedics.
We’re proud to offer a digital space where members can connect instantly with peers across the country—for gut checks, guidance, and growth.
What started with a need to connect and learn has grown into something beyond what I ever imagined. I’m deeply grateful for everyone who believed in this mission and gave so freely to a cause bigger than themselves.
Here’s to the next 20 years!”
