Leadership and Impact

If you had a magic wand and could permanently solve one of your department’s biggest challenges right now, what would that be?

If I could solve one of my department’s biggest challenges right now, I would eliminate the unpredictability and fragmentation that is present in today’s research funding landscape. Research excellence depends on stable funding pipelines, amongst many other things. Yet many teams are constrained by inconsistent cycles, complex application processes, and award timelines that are difficult to forecast.

Looking back over the past three years, what are the two most impactful things you have accomplished in your role?

  1. Successful implementation of clinical Sports Nutrition Program. We now have a team of 3 dieticians that provide comprehensive testing, counseling, and nutrition programming to help maximize performance. This program was important for us and allowed us to add more expertise to the multi-disciplinary approach to treating and caring for athletes of all types.
  2. From a financial perspective, I am proud to have a now profitable surgical skills lab within our Sports Medicine Institute. Our training venue is a hub for international courses, national industry offerings and institutional partnerships. Ohio State’s departments of Orthopedics, Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology (ENT) utilize the surgical skills lab for simulating challenges across multiple organ systems and surgical specialties

The AOC and the Power of the Collective

What is the most valuable way that the AOC helped you and your Department?

The most valuable way the AOC has helped me and my department is through the depth and quality of information that is provided on a consistent basis. The team does an excellent job at hosting webinars and discussions that are timely with current events and challenges that all Academic Orthopedic Institutions are facing together. The AOC conference has been extremely impactful. The team does a great job at bringing together experts, partners, and industry in a well-organized format that is loaded with meaningful content.

The Human Side of the Role

When was the last time someone told you they were proud of you for the work you do, either at work or at home, and what was that about?

My wife, Jenna, has always been a huge support person in my career and often expresses how proud she is. She is always excited to hear about the good days, but most importantly is interested in the bad days too. It is important to have someone who believes in you and notices the quiet work you do.

What is your “superpower”, a skill or strength you have that you genuinely love to use in your job and feel you are especially good at?

I would say that my “superpower” is having the ability to bring people together and create clarity, so they feel supported and confident in what they’re doing. I don’t see it as anything flashy—just a skill I’ve worked on over time. I listen closely, try to understand what people need, and help break things down so the team can move forward with a shared direction. What I enjoy most is seeing others succeed because they had the space, information, and encouragement to do their best work.

Reflection and Perspective

If you could go back and give yourself one or two pieces of career advice earlier in your journey, what would they be?

The relationships that you build are just as important as producing great work. By investing in relationships, you can multiply the impact that you have on your team. This can be from a non-leader perspective too. Strong relationships can also open doors for future opportunities.

Just for Fun

What is your go to favorite meal?

My favorite go to meal is a medium-well steak with creamed spinach and a salad.

If you could binge on any fast food and be guaranteed not to gain any weight, what would it be?

Raising Cane’s Chicken! I love their chicken, french fries, and Texas toast. Their sauce is amazing too!

If you were snowed in for a weekend and could binge watch one TV show, what would you choose?

Yellowstone
